Jenkins was walking to the rendezvous point and trying to think about what Goldstein had meant. For that last walk, Ryan had slung his rifle over his left shoulder, as he did not want to irritate the gunshot wound. The young soldier felt guilty for killing his partner, but Goldstein had asked him to do it and he was in no position to deny a dying man’s wishes.

The Crows had won yet again, which was to be expected in a traditional game. It was not an annihilation match; no handicaps were present. It was as fair as it was going to get. In the league, the other team was ranked lower, but the influx of new soldiers on the Crows’ roster, namely Roth and Templeton, was enough for the Commission to think it was a fair match.

The victory felt especially hollow to Jenkins. He was not fighting for anything he believed in; he got nothing from team statistics or shallow pride. It was all luck, from his perspective. The two of them could have easily switched places and Zachary could be walking towards the rendezvous point with a bullet in his shoulder. Ryan could have bled out from his temple as the older soldier walked away.

Jenkins shook the thought from his head. Goldstein would have been perfectly fine if their positions were reversed; the merchant would not have wavered in getting that gun from the other soldier. It made Jenkins a little uncomfortable that the man was so callous about these things, but in the back of his mind it made a certain sense. Jenkins wondered if he would end up the same way.

The transport was sitting above a ridge nearby, a trail of soldiers leading up the ramp to the cargo bay. Jenkins walked towards the ship and grimaced as his shoulder plate jostled against his wound. He could tell the bullet had not hit an artery, he would have already bled out otherwise, but that did not stop the wound from hurting. The hole in his arm was seeping blood onto his clothing under the armor as well, and that was not particularly comfortable. For the last ten minutes, Ryan had wished he could teleport to the clinic and skip ahead to his recovery. He really just wanted to stop worrying about it.

When he arrived, Ryan discovered that most of the Crows that had survived were already sitting down in the transport. Jenkins sat on the left side towards the middle of the bench and looked at his comrades, watching their behavior. There was not a single joke or discussion and the somber Crows were just sitting on their benches. Jenkins checked his visor to see if there were any other soldiers out there on the field and he could see three more ID tags closing the distance.

He started to feel anxious at the silence and looked across the aisle of the transport. Cortes, he could tell from the man’s build and ID tag in his display, was sitting there, staring at his gun.
